Dark interiors push the boundaries of comfort for many (especially if they also include pattern) but there are so many levels you can take it to. Just stop when the room feels right to you.

By using dark florals, you will create an exciting interior that will add a combination of sophistication and drama. It will also allow you to really showcase your furniture and accessories. These details may have otherwise be overlooked.

If you are intrigued to see the many different styles and ways to incorporate this look into your home, then keep reading. There are a lot of great tips to help you to make the right decision for your space.

I will also cover – decorating small rooms, where is best to use floral wallpapers, what furniture suits this decorating style and where you can buy this style of wallpaper from.

How To Chose A Dark Floral Wallpaper  – Inspiration To Help You Decide Your Style

So, how to do you decide your style of wallpaper? I am going to show you many inspirational images that have various colours, pattern scales and layout designs. This will give you a great starting point for deciding on which one will fit your space best.

Let’s Start With A Bold Vintage Floral Pattern

Just look at this stunning bedroom by @the_adventurousix. A large, bold pattern like this one give so much depth to a room. The muted flower colours with a dark background keeps your eyes moving around the wallpaper. Each time your eyes will find new details that you never noticed before.

Pairing the pink blush velvet bedding with white side tables, pulls all the colours in the room together perfectly. I will mention later in this post how to decide on furniture for this style of wallpaper (so note the solid colours in the furniture here as a hint 😉 )

Are you drawn to wallpaper with small-medium floral patterns?

Are large, bold floral patterns too daring for you? You could still create a beautiful room with a pattern of a smaller scale.

This lovely room above from @little.coastal.cottage is a great balance between having enough pattern to be the feature of the room but not too much that it puts you out of your comfort zone.

Keeping a balance of colours is another way to ‘tip your toe’ into this style. White skirting and fresh white bedding puling the lighter colours out of the roses, keeping the room light and airy.

Do you like the dark floral style but want to keep your style monochrome?

This large scale floral wallpaper from Next is a great idea if you want to keep the pattern but have no colour. At least not through the wallpaper.

The scale of the rose print is large and bold. And, with its metallic shimmer on the petals, it is a style that will fit nicely into any contemporary home. It will also add a soft and romantic element to the room.

There are many beautiful homes these days that are styled in monochrome, so this rose wallpaper will fit in great. If you do want to add colour to your room then you can go as daring as you wish. Through bedding and accessories, you could go as light as blush pink or as dark as forest green. This rose wallpaper will definitely do well with most colours.

Alternative Idea No.1 –

I have seen some wallpapers that simplify the floral design further. Simple line drawings of roses/flowers keeps the design of the room looking delicate whilst the visual impact is still bold.

Alternative Idea No.2 –

There are also floral wallpapers that incorporate other details such as birds and butterflies. This is an extra detail if you want to add something more to the floral element. The feature photo of this post has bird detailing incorporated as an example to show you.

Are you worried your room is too small for dark wallpaper?

I hope by the end of this post you will see so many different ways to use dark floral wallpaper in your home. And, they will help you to decide what’ is best for you and your space.

How gorgeous is this bedroom by @mrsphome with just a small amount of dark wallpaper used. All the colours tie together beautifully. The softness of the colours, the delicate voile fabric and the wall panelling should hopefully show you that it doesn’t need to be a full wall of pattern to create an impact.

If you are unsure due to the size of your room, why not just wallpaper a section of your wall. This will help to get you comfortable with introducing dark floral wallpaper into your room. You can always add darker-coloured bedding, cushions and curtains later if you are happy to take the look further.

Why Darker Walls Work in Small Spaces

“Dark walls will make your room look smaller”……. I’m sure we’ve all heard this before. But, what some people don’t realise is if you design your space correctly, a darker room will have more depth to it than a plain white space. Just have a look at this lovely single bedroom by @little.rose.house. It shows that small rooms can also suit darker wallpaper.

Instead of having a white room with obvious corners, dark colours can blur the corners of your walls into each other when used on more than one wall. Therefore, changing how the walls appear in your space.

Also, placing the correct furniture and accessories in a small room will add depth to your room. I’ll explain this a bit further down.

Designer Tips/Ideas for Using Dark Floral Wallpaper In Small Rooms

  • Use floral wallpaper only on the upper part of your room, and use light paint on the lower part
  • Large patterns can work in small spaces – get creative and add fun
  • Add a large mirror – either on the wall or a full height one leaning against the wall (my fav)
  • If your room is small why not just let it be – don’t try to make it something it’s not. Throw out any design ‘rules’ and embrace the space

I once wallpapered my small downstairs toilet in a dark augerine pattern and only left one wall white….it was my favourite room in the house!

Where are the best places to use floral wallpaper?

Anywhere, is my answer.

The variety of images in this post will let you see that dark floral wallpaper can look stunning in any room. It may not suit everyone’s taste but if you want to decorate your home with some personality and eye catching decor, then why not use it in any room you wish.

Bedroom and Guest Rooms

This dreamy bedroom is from @ria.fletcher. Ria has created a cosy bedroom by adding depth with the wallpaper and adding softness with the bedding in matching colours.

As for guest bedrooms, I alway say if you want to try something a bit different to your normal style but aren’t quite brave enough to bring it into your public rooms yet, then a guest bedroom is the place to try it out.

Living Room

Bathroom

In modern homes you may find yourself with many bathrooms to decorate. So, if you are unsure how bold you want to go with your decorating, why not have a trial run in one of those bathrooms?

Ensuites, guest bathrooms and under-stair toilets are great places to get creative and have fun with patterns and colours. I’d love to know if you’ve got any funky bathrooms in your home, let me know in the comments below.

Dressing rooms

Another place you can get creative with dark floral wallpaper is dressing rooms. Check out this pretty floral wallpaper above (and below) from @mrperswall. Ensure that when you are designing the layout of your cupboard and storage space that you keep one wall (or the majority of it at least) free so your space doesn’t feel too closed in…..and also so you can put gorgeous wallpaper up!

Hallway

Hallways come in all shapes and sizes. So, while considerating all the styles shown in this post, decide what scale of floral wallpaper is best suited for you and your home.

With hallways, also bare in mind they tend to have very little natural light. So, think about your lighting and reflective surfaces i.e. mirrors that will help you to get your desired look.

Kitchen – Dining – Utility Room

I love the bright colours and how well the wallpaper works with this dining space. It is another great example of how you can easily use darker toned wallpaper whilst still keeping your room bright and vibrant.

Kids Rooms – Playrooms

Children’s bedrooms, nurseries and playrooms are where you can design for fun and get creative like the fantastic room by @pennies_for_a_fortune. Using both colour and pattern can look great in these evolving spaces.

They will be rooms that may possibly get decorated every few years as your child grows. So, think outside the box and create something truly inspiring for your child to grow up with.

Alternative ways to use your dark floral wallpaper

If you are still unsure if dark floral wallpaper is for you, then check out a few other ways that you can add this style of wallpaper to your home.

Green room with dark floral wallpaper
  • As you can see in the image above by Graham & Brown, you can use blocks of pattern and paint to break up a wall if you wish to have both. Wallpapering inside of the panelled walls is a good way to break up a wall if you feel that a full wall of pattern would be too much. Dark panelled walls have really taking off on Instagram right now but as always, decide what style and look is best for you AND for the foreseeable future as trends move on, so make sure you love it.
  • If you have alcoves in your room, wallpaper either the alcoves or the main wall. Another way to have both wallpaper and paint.

  • If you don’t want to add floral wallpaper (or any style that may be a bit out of your comfort zone) then why not use a panel screen/ room divider to put your bold wallpaper on to (image by – Graham & Brown). A great advantage to this style is that you can move the screen around the room as you wish. Design the top of the screen in a unique style to match other shapes in the space. And, it is also cheaper to change when you wish to move on to another wallpaper.
  • You could place wallpaper cuttings inside of picture frames to display in your room. This will give you the pattern and colours of the dark floral wallpaper but very easy to swap out when you wish.
  • Or if you want to take your home to the next level, then add wallpaper to your ceiling just like the gorgeous image below.

Now, how amazing is this ceiling covered in floral wallpaper by @hardy_cottage!

This look works brilliantly because the ceiling is high and the rest of the walls are kept simple. The floral style is complimented by the greenery on the wall art piece and it is also carried throughout the room, creating a cosy and relaxing space.

What furniture and accessories go with dark floral wallpaper?

Trying to get the balance right between the floral wallpaper and the rest of the items that you require in your room, may be another problem that you need help with. If you want to keep some lightness then I would recommend using white or light colours against your patterned wallpaper.

In some of the images above, you may have noticed how the white skirting boards and white ceiling cornicing help to keep the room looking bright and fresh.

Or, if you absolutely love colour and want to create a powerful and exciting space, then have a look at this image by @wallpapered

If you wish to create a room that really embraces the dark floral style then try to pull colours from the wallpaper and use them within your furniture. This will create the ultimate dark and moody space that is bursting with personality.

Try to reuse home accessories you already have with your floral wallpaper

You may already have home accessories that are strong enough to stand out from your chosen wallpaper, so definitely use them if you can. You could also spray paint items that you still love but are not right for the room now that it has been decorated.

Some people may not realise but when you are placing decor items against a dark background, it can showcase the item as the background falls away due to the depth of colour. If you wish to see this in further detail, head over to my Pinterest board for Dark Home Decor ideas where you can see how a dark background can really make your home accessories and art work pop.

Also, using metal-toned accessories within your room is another way to reflect light in the space, as well as mirrors that have been previously mentioned.

The main thing with your accessories and soft furnishings (cushions etc) is to pull the colours from the wallpaper and carry them throughout the room. This will ensure your space make sense visually.

Other ways to bring a dark floral style into your home

If you are still not quite sure on which floral to go for, why not try adding floral in the following places and see how you feel –

  • Cushions
  • Art work
  • Bed Runners
  • Curtains
  • Bedding

There are also peelable wallpapers available, although I haven’t researched them personally, they could be another option for you.

Where to buy dark floral wallpaper

There are a lot of places where you can find beautiful wallpapers, so be sure to narrow down your style and colour before starting. You will get overwhelmed otherwise.

I will always advise to order samples of any wallpapers that you are serious about before buying rolls. This will allow you to hold the samples against the wall(s) and ensure the colour and scale is perfect. Phone screens can be deceiving!

Also, note that wallpaper designs now come in various ways, so double check what you are buying –

  • Standard rolls
  • Wide-width rolls
  • Murals – which are made to measure for your wall size
  • Rolls with multi panels/sections

Below, are a few places where you can find dark floral wallpaper to buy, so check them out. This list could be a mile long but these are places I have seen recently with lovely styles.
