AUTUMN HOME DECOR TIPS
#1: Add Candles
Let’s start with the easiest and quickest way to change the atmosphere in your home. I love nothing better than turning all the lights off and curling up on the sofa with just the candles burning. The shadows and candlelight really create the best atmosphere to relax in and is a great way to add warmth to a room.
Looking to keep it subtle? You could add white or coloured candles at various heights and thicknesses, giving you a neutral style.
Or are you wanting to fully embrace the season? You could add pumpkin-shaped candles of various sizes, choose candles with autumn scents such as Crackling Cedar Wood, Spiced Pumpkin or Mulled Cider. Yummmm.
How to display candles in your home
- Inside hurricane glass vases
- On a tray with various other candles at different heights
- Inside season-appropriate candleholders (more on this further down)
- Floating within a vase of water
- Surrounded with dried flowers/leaves/berries
Where to display your candles – ideas
- Fireplace hearth – Cluster a group of candles together and place to the side of your fireplace
- On open shelving so they are out of reach of any little ones or pets
- Display on large wood slices for a warm, rustic feel
- Bathrooms – Don’t forget to bring some Autumn warmth into your bathtime.
Where to find the best candles for your budget
Most importantly, remember there are so many beautiful styles of candles out there, so you don’t have to overspend. Below, are a few places you can find suitable candles for your budget.
£ – Supermarkets (home aisles), Dunelm, Bargain Stores
££ – Etsy, John Lewis, The White Company, Rockett St George, Interior Boutique Shops
£££ – Jo Malone, Molton Brown, Tom Ford
#2: Add Soft Furnishings…..And Lots Of Texture
To really create a cosy home for the Autumn months you need to add comfort. The best way to do this is by adding rugs, cushions, and throw blankets. Soft finishes are a must for these additions as we naturally gravitate towards them on cold, dark nights.
- Rugs
If you have hardwood or tiled flooring in your home, rugs will instantly add cosiness to your room. If you already have carpet, then think of a rug as adding layers for even more warmth and texture.
I used to have two different rugs that I swapped over depending on the seasons, one was bright and bold the other one was darker and much more suited to the darker months of the year. If you have the space to store a rolled-up rug I would advise you to consider trying this out yourself.
- Cushions
Now, you are either a lover or a hater of cushions! Personally, I love them (of course 😉 )
I am not necessarily suggesting that you add more, you can of course, the more the merrier I say but you can swap out cushion covers with the seasons. To create a cosier atmosphere and more comfort, you could also add knitted or fluffier cushions to your existing ones. Large knitted cushions are chunky and soft which are the two must-haves for achieving the perfect home decor for the Autumn months.
- Throw Blankets
These are a must!
Even if the heating is on full power I still love pulling a blanket over me if I’m curled up watching a movie.
Blankets are great as accessories on the back/arms of your sofa or chairs, but moving into the Autumn months it is great to be able to put them to their proper use.
Also, when not in use you could layer them up by mixing colours and textures together. For example, a super soft light coloured blanket would look great with a chunky knitted blanket layered over the top. You could use different shades of one colour or even contrast colours to suit your style.
Blankets are probably the easiest Autumn home decor idea to get started with as you may already have some laying around in your home.
#3: Fabric Choices
When deciding on your Soft Furnishings (Tip no.2) you should also consider the fabric choice which will help to make your home cosy and Autumn ready.
No matter what your interior style is, there will be a fabric that will suit you. You could try adding the following fabrics into your home –
- Velvet
- Wool
- Checks
- Tartan – this could be traditional or with a modern twist
- Subtle pattern
#4: Introduce New Colours Into Your Home
Now, most people will not want the expense of changing too much in their home but adding a few items with Autumn colours can be enough to give you the look and vibe you are after.
If you keep these items packaged away safely you can reuse the items and also add a few extra bits the following Autumn.
What colours will make your home cozy for Autumn?
Your traditional Autumnal colours are –
- Browns (Chocolate, Amber, Light Brown)
- Yellows (Neither too bright or too muted)
- Reds (Deep, Brick Red, Burgundy)
- Oranges (Brunt Orange, Copper, Pumpkin)
- Greens (Moss, Forest, Pine)
But, if you want something a little bit different try these colours –
- Taupe or Golds
- Mustard or Ochre
- Blue (Denim, Navy, Royal)
- Grey (Slate, Brown Greys, Blue Greys)
- Pink (Crimson, Dusky)
- Teal
- Purple (Aubergine, Plum, Mauve)
- Peacock Tones (Teal, Fuschia Pink, Purple, Blue)

#5: Seasonal Wreaths
Traditionally wreaths were associated with winter, but that is no longer the case.
They are now the ultimate Autumn accessory! (And even Spring….but more on that early next year 😉 )
Autumn wreaths have been getting more popular over the last few years and it is so lovely to see all the styles and colours.
Therefore, you will find one to suit your taste no matter what your home style is. Real wreaths that are made by local florists will make your home smell beautiful.
Also, there are some amazing faux wreaths that will last you for years to come.
Where to display your Autumn Wreath?
Here are some ideas of where to hang your Autumn Wreath –
- Front Door – for maximum exposure
- Inside Front Door – to spice up your hallway and for your own viewing
- Hallway – Hang above a console table, on a cupboard door, lay in a wicker basket with other seasonal items
- Fireplace – hang above or place on the mantlepiece
- Use as a centrepiece with candles/lanterns in the centre
- Hang in front of a window so it can be enjoyed from outside and also inside
Do you want to keep your Autumn Wreath subtle?
Go for a traditional style wreath with lots of foliage, fur cones and eucalyptus. Also, dried citrus fruit and berries will add pops of colour which will add a little bit more ‘oomph’ to your wreath.
Or would you like to really have your wreath stand out and have something a little bit extra special?
Add battery operated fairy lights, glitter edged leaves, baubles or bows.
#6: Finishing Touches – including pumpkins of all sizes
As with most rooms in our home, the magic happens when you add your finishing touches. And, sometimes you don’t even realise your room is missing something until you add those last few pieces. Try the following suggestions and see how it adds another layer to your autumnal look.
- Chunky large lanterns should be at the top of your shopping list as they are great for displaying candles, pumpkins, string lights and pine cones.
- If you have a mantlepiece or staircase, you could display garlands of autumn leaves which really take your home to the next level.
- Is anyone else seeing the growing trend of coloured pumpkins? Lots of beautiful colours are filling my Instagram feed and I love it! Maybe I’m late to noticing this because I’m in the U.K and we tend to not change our decor too much for the seasons changing (some spring days look like autumn here at times) so why not try adding some grey/green pumpkins or even white pumpkins, they really look stunning.
- Oh…….and have you seen the knitted and fabric pumpkins? They are super cute and also reusable for next year.
#7: Metal Accessories
All metal vases and large bowls look great with autumnal displays, but especially brass and rose gold. So, why not add some pine cones, acorns, berries and other foliage to create a focal point in your room.
This is so easily changed each season and not a great overall cost.
Also, if you have an entrance space outside your front door you could display some tall twigs and dried flowers in metal planters…..and if the planter is a bit ‘aged’ looking then even better! That’ll add to the look.
And let’s not forget all the stunning effects that metal tealight/candle holders can add to a room. I especially love the ones with cut out patterns so you can see the flame flickering away…..oh I’m craving some cosy chilling now.
#8: Fairy Lights
Now, for me, twinkle lights are the ultimate of cosiness.
They can be placed anywhere, and the more creative you are the better.
- Fireplaces – On top, laid in front, placed inside (in not a working fireplace of course)
- Vases/Bowl – put pine cones inside and entwine with fairy lights
- Curtains Poles – If your curtains aren’t required to close then wrap your fairy lights along the pole. If they do need to close, you could lay them on the window ledge and then drape them on the top edge once they are closed
- Stairways – wrap the lights around your handrail, spindles or drape in a curtain style
- Shelves – see below how I styled my hallway shelf

#9: Thicker Bedding
I swear by this personally. And I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t experience it in one of the coldest places in Scotland on a snowy night.
I once stayed in a beautiful cabin and all the bedding, duvet and pillows were all from a top-end high street store. It really did feel like you were sinking into the best bed in the world (and it wasn’t even mine).
So for those autumn into winter months, change your bedding to the best quality you can afford, it really will add another layer of cosiness to your home as the autumn draws in.
#10: Heavier Curtains
Window dressings in the colder months are definitely something to consider whether your home is old or new.
For older houses, you probably already know that heavy, interlined curtains at your windows, and possibly even your doors, will help not only with drafts but aesthetically the house really does suit having well-made window dressings that can with-stand the colder months.
For newer homes, there may not be as great a need as houses are much more energy-efficient now. But still, swapping lightweight curtains or floaty voiles for much thicker looking curtains can change the whole atmosphere of your home.
Also, you could match the seasonal curtains to the additional cushions and rug – this could be your autumn/fall basic kit, that can be changed out with the seasons. And lastly, you could update your smaller accessories each year to add any new trends that you like.
#11: Jars With Seasonal Treats
I’ve left the best to last!
If you missed the glass cookie jar trend a while back, then I’m sure you are a few pounds lighter than I am! Organising your cookies, snacks, cakes etc all stacked neatly inside the large jars will have you licking your computer screens if you go searching for it now I promise you…..or is that just me?
Anyways, you could fill these large jars and have them displayed in your kitchen or somewhere handy to reach as it’s all about creating a warm and cosy autumn/fall home, so they need to be seen.
Some ideas for the seasonal treats inside your jars could be…
- Halloween themed biscuits
- Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels
- Cookies with autumn coloured smarties through them
Here in Scotland, I think I would put leaf-shaped shortbread in there….but I doubt they would stay long in the jars tho!
And, as an extra little tip – why not tie some autumn coloured ribbon around the top of the jars or natural twine (you could even punch some holes in beautiful coloured handpicked leaves and add them to the twine).
I really hope my 11 best autumn home decor ideas on how to make your home cosy for Autumn/Fall has been helpful and you can take a few of the ideas away and use within your home.
